International Center for Integrative Medicine (ICIM) designed and executed the first Integrative Medicine (IM) service in 2011 at Highland General Hospital, Alameda Health System, ICIM’s goal was to develop a world-class model for providing healing-oriented medicine from the East and the West to all patients and train on acute care practice, emphasizing the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient.

Dr. Amy Matecki and Dr. Alex Feng brought a team of volunteer acupuncturists to the acute care setting to provide Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in conjunction with the prescribed allopathic care at the inpatient bedside. In 2012, this practice was expanded to the outpatient setting in the Internal Medicine Department.

In 2014 the Division of Integrative Medicine was formed and ICIM implemented the first TCM Residency Program in conjunction with Five Branches University that is located in San Jose, CA. From 2016-2019 ICIM provided inpatient and outpatient IM to the population of Highland General Hospital and rotated 36 TCM graduate students through the TCM Residency program. There are powerful witnesses to the program’s effectiveness from the graduates in our Testimonial Page.

This program was in hiatus during the pandemic and ICIM is now prepared to re-engage the Clinical Training in a new setting at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, in September, 2023. ICIM has revised the curriculum and secured a new setting in a non profit private urban hospital; the Clinical Training is open to TCM graduate students as well as practicing acupuncturists who want to add the inpatient setting to their skill set.

ICIM has a rigorous set of admission criteria and a delineated curriculum across multiple medical specialties. Our graduates have been placed in acute care settings and in positions of leadership and the learning opportunities are highly sought after.
